Martha's Fencing Project

This weeks project asked us to calculate the square feet of carpet that Martha will need to purchase in her home.

The answer is 150 square feet.

This type of thinking requires students to only know the formula for calculating the area of a rectangle. According to Bloom's, this question has students functioning at the Knowledge stage . This type of question requires students to recall a formula and plug in the numbers provided in a problem ("plug and chug"). There is no problem solving or questioning occurring.

What scares me about this activity is that I have had many of my fourth graders complete assignments like this to assess whether they understand area or perimeter. Clearly, this only tells me if they remember the formula for area and perimeter. Next year I will do better.
